About Bahta Yohannes
Bahta Yohannes brings finance, information technology, and theology into a conversation none of them can have alone. His work asks the questions that each discipline on its own cannot answer — about what human beings are for, what we have built, and what we still have time to choose. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Machine Pharaohs
Artificial intelligence is not merely automating tasks. It is dismantling the conditions under which human beings experience themselves as necessary. Workers are losing not only income but the daily encounter with stakes that made work worth something.
A civilization is approaching the question it has deferred for centuries — what are human beings for? — at precisely the moment when the systems it has built are ready to answer without consulting any human being at all.
“We did not lose our freedom overnight. We traded it — quietly, willingly, piece by piece — for comfort.”
Bahta Yohannes
A single conviction
The books Bahta Yohannes writes begin from a single conviction: that the most important questions about artificial intelligence are not technical questions. They are not even primarily economic or political questions. They are questions about what human beings are, what we were made for, and what we owe each other in the face of systems that do not know we exist and would not care if they did.
That conviction grows from a life lived at the intersection of the practical and the prophetic — working in financial systems while studying the traditions that have always asked whether those systems serve human flourishing or merely human appetite. The answer, in this moment, is not obvious. The books are an attempt to make it less obscure.
Future books will continue in the same direction: serious engagement with the present moment from the perspective of a faith that takes both the present moment and the permanent things seriously.
